The reason why i thought to write about Durian is because today at our home we just ate durian ( Personally i don't like this fruit. ( i had only one bulb :) ) My husband never tried Durian. That's why that day we bought just for him to try and he also didn't like it.

These 2 pics i just clicked on my mobile today when we cut the Durian.

As per Wikipedia, The name "durian" is derived from the Malay-Indonesian languages word for duri or "spike".

Regarded by many people in southeast asia Durian is distinctive for its large size, strong odour, and formidable thorn-covered husk. The fruit can grow as large as 30 centimetres (12 in) long and 15 centimetres (6 in) in diameter, and it typically weighs one to three kilograms (2 to 7 lb). Its shape ranges from oblong to round, the colour of its husk green to brown, and its flesh pale yellow to red, depending on the species.

The edible flesh emits a distinctive odour that is strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Some people regard the durian as having a pleasantly sweet fragrance while others find the aroma overpowering and revolting. The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, The persistence of its odour, which may linger for several days, has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in Southeast Asia.

This fruit available only for a season. Mostly from end of June to August. Here in Sri Lanka for season can be widely seen in all the markets. some people sell in road sides as well.

Though it smells bad Durian is an excellent source of energy. It consist Vtamin C, Vitamin B, Iron, copper, Potassium, etc. Also it can help for delaying aging, healthy digestive system, maintaining the blood sugar level, maintaining the blood pressure level, etc.

Durian Tree

Durian trees are very big. A fully grown durian tree will grow up to 150 feet tall. Durian trees need abundant rainfall, or equivalent irrigation. In most areas of Asia where durians are grown, mean annual rainfall is greater than 2000 mm [75 inches].

Rich soil conditions will make the tree grow well and fast. Sometimes four to five-year old trees can start to flower. The secret is in the soil. Organic fertilizer will improve the soil by balancing the pH level. This will produce quantity and quality durians
